WW170: LOLIWARE, THE tUnE-yArDs, AND BIG HERO 6

Welcome to Wonderful Wednesday!!
Here are 5 things I love this week - I hope you enjoy them….

1.) Big Hero 6 is a Disney film coming up (inspired by the Marvel Comics superhero team of the same name). Set in the fictional city of  San Fransokyo (San Francisco + Tokyo).  a young robotics prodigy and his self-created robot Baymax uncover a criminal plot and pull together a team of inexperienced crime-fighters to solve the mystery surrounding the crime.

Last year, they released this concept art:

…..then….the good folks at Mar-sney (that is my Marvel/Disney made up name) have come up with this poster…….

2.) I CANNOT get this song out of my head!!!!!!!! Thank you Tune-Yards!

The Tune-Yards (tUnE-yArDs) is the music project of New England native Merrill Garbus. When performing live, Garbus creates drum loops on the spot, and layers these with ukulele, and vocals, in addition to electric bass played by Nate Brenner. The Whokill (stylized as w h o k i l l) tour has added a saxophone section, consisting of Matt Nelson and Noah Bernstein.

GRREEEEEAAAAT!!!!

3.)  Ok….so I like this……...“Luminous Giants” created by lighting designer Dean Skira. In collaboration with Uljanik Shipyard (one of the oldest working shipyards in the world) Dean transforms the shipyard's cranes into a site-specific installation featuring choreographed light and music displays. Skira and a group of technicians illuminated the cranes with LED spotlights!! It's like Christmas!! 

Here's what he says about it…..

 “The industrial revolution in the early 19th century has brought us some new ‘monuments’ which still stand and move every day in the gentle dance of steel, helping to create some of the greatest commercial ships ever built. This dance has been going on for almost 200 years and I wanted to create a colorful stage on which these giants could perform. "

WW160: APPLE CIDER SANGRIA, NOW YOU SEE ME, and FRANCO BRAMBILLA

5 things I love this week……please enjoy!

1.) Hey nerds…..you're gonna LOVE this…...Illustrator Franco Brambilla takes beautiful vintage postcards and adds his won brand of silly nerdi-ness to create these fantastic science fiction postcards:

2.) This is interesting. You know, I like to think we live in a different time. The sad fact is….that people are still afraid of people who are different from themselves…….I dunno if you saw that VIRAL "First Kiss" video where a filmmaker set up two strangers to meet and suck each others faces off…….Well….the Gay Women Channel on YouTube decided to have a little fun with it. They found some mildly homophobic but open volunteers to meet gay people and have a very safe, platonic hug. The results were surprisingly heartwarming…..

So there you go!

3.) Ok….this is SUCH old news…..but…..if you are looking for a fast-paced brainless popcorn action movie….may I suggest "Now You See Me". I saw it this weekend, and really enjoyed it!!!

Louis Leterrier (of "Transporter" fame) has created a really fun film! Yes…..it is light on the seriousness and heavy on the style — Ebert called it "a razzle-dazzle fantasy about a team of bank-robbing illusionists" - which is pretty succinct! It’s slick, deliberately silly, and nothing short of a special effects extravaganza! The cast is CRAZY; Jesse Eisenberg, Isla Fisher, Woody Harrelson, Dave Franco, Mark Ruffalo, Mélanie Laurent and Morgan Freeman….and you never quite know what is coming up next!

Basically it is a heist film that is done mostly by "magic" — but don't let that turn you off……..it is  "proudly outlandish" and involve everything from giant mirrors, doubles, hypnosis, copious amounts of flash paper, and holograms as tricks. It is what makes the film so entertaining — in a gaudy, disposable, Vegas act sort of way! It is just non-stop, ever-escalating ridiculousness. 

Enjoyable!

4.) Where my drinkers at? I really want to try this……

APPLE CIDER SANGRIA

1 1/2 cups cinnamon simple syrup*
1 box Black Box white wine (I used Sauvignon Blanc.)
2 cups Apple Pie Vodka
2 cups ginger brandy
4 cups apple cider
1 cup grapes, sliced in half
4 apples, cubed
4 pears, cubed
8 – 10 cinnamon sticks

Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher, cover, and refrigerate for 2 hours or up to 2 days. Serve over ice.

*Bring 1 cup sugar, 2 cups water, and 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon to a simmer over medium-high heat until sugar is completely dissolved. I usually let the mixture simmer for about 10 minutes to create a thicker syrup. Allow syrup to cool completely.

5.) This made me laugh…...Todd Spence -- art illustrator and editor of Break.com, created these "mash-ups" of the two main characters from HBO's True Detective, Rustin Cohle (Matt McConaughy) and Marty Hart (Woody Harrelson) with vintage Hardy Boys Detective novels.

WW47: WEAPONS OF MASSIVE CONSUMPTION!

When I finished this post, I realized that almost everything I listed was for sale.
I WAS SHOCKED and saddened.
I was gonna re-organize and split it all up....
Truthfully, nothing material will ever help ANYONE find true meaningful happiness.
But then I thought.....the heck with it....let's 'givver!
And although money cannot buy happiness.......it can buy a bunch of things......enjoy:

Yes...I know it is a year old.....but I am just reading it now!! And I LOVE it. Tina Fey is a GENIUS! If you love a good laugh.....GET THIS BOOK!!! Available in hardcover and now available in paperback!!  

5.) Finally.....what to do when booze, food and chocolate has failed me er, I mean you? Do you take up smoking? Drugs? Day-sleeping??? NOPE. A well placed vacation can cure ALL (unless you have spent all your vacation money on an unexpected studio renovation) **insert deep sigh here....ANYWAYS.....another place I would really like to go to is New Orleans.....for the obvious reasons....but........here is ANOTHER reason why:

Picture it........New Orleans, Louisiana......on the east bank of the mighty Mississip! SIGNS AND POSTERS OF DISNEY.....PT3

You know, I just cannot get enough of Eric Tan's Disney Pixar posters.

They are so well done. 

I like the retro vibe they have. As you know, I have a bit of retro flair myself.

I also have a thing for comic books. I don't collect them, but I enjoy the look of them.

I often emulate the look in my paintings.

These are inspired by the Pixar film "The Incredibles".

The colours are super saturated, and the graphic quality is really effective.

Love the teal with the pink. The diagonal line is great!

I also love the white marks that make it look like crumpled paper.
