WW179: THE CORNERSHOP, GROWN UPS READ, and THE SAPPHIRES

Sorry I haven't blogged since last week……I am bring to take some time off…..but I didn't forget about you, dear readers!!! Here are the 5 things I love this week:

1.) Lucy Sparrow in the UK…..transformed an abandoned Cornershop into a unique pop-up grocery store filled with hand made felt products. Each item- from the bean cans, to the snacks, drinks, frozen dinners, chewing gum and newspapers are made entirely out of felt: each meticulously hand sewn, stuffed and priced to sell! Just look at this…..

 CRAAAAZY!!!!
I love it so much!
Now if you are like me, and simply cannot make it to the UK this month…..go to her website…
http://www.thecornershoponline.com

AH-MAH-ZING! Right???
(thanks to Junk Culture for this!)

2.) You need to listen to this Canadian podcast (if you don't listen to the CBC Radio One) Grownups Read Things They Wrote as Kids.

The premise is simple and wonderful (and perfect for my friend Cheepay!!) Adults recite passages written by their younger selves, culled from old school assignments, letters from camp, poetry, short stories and personal diaries kept safe over the years.

The series is hosted/created by Dan Misener and taped all over Canada! It is marvellous!!!!
GO GET IT ON ITUNES!!!
or go to the Facebook Page or follow on Tweets

(thanks Deb for sending me to this!!)

3.) THIS!!! Belle Air bathtub hardware designed by Christo Lefroy Brooks!

COME ON!!!!!!!
So fan-freaking-tastic!!!

4.) Way behind on this…..but I really enjoyed the movie "The Sapphires"

From 2012 -- this is an Australian musical/comedy/drama film based on the 2004 stage play of the same name which is loosely based on a true story! It is really enjoyable….and is about four indigenous women, Gail (Deborah Mailman), Julie (Jessica Mauboy), Kay (Shari Sebbens) and Cynthia (Miranda Tapsell), who are discovered by a talent scout (Chris O'Dowd), and form a music group named The Sapphires, travelling to Vietnam in 1968 to sing for troops during the war.
Enjoyable!!!! Here is a clip:

I thought the music was great, it looked great. Loads of heart….what else do you need????
Go see it!

5.) Unnecessary Censorship. THIS is amusing….a bit filthy…..but amusing…..(the YouTube links are below if the clips don't show up on your phone! ;-)

WW172: RIVERDALE FARM AID, 99% INVISIBLE, and One Take Movies

Welcome to Wonderful Wednesday!!!
Here are the 5 things I want you to love this week……

1.) Riverdale Farm. Ok….as many of you know, I am only one generation away from the farm. My relatives still run the family farm in Port Burwell, Ontario. So somewhere in me there is a farm boy just waiting to be get out!! (ok…maybe WAAAAAY deep - but still) That is partly why I love Riverdale Farm!

Riverdale Farm is a 7.4-acre municipally operated farm in the heart of Cabbagetown, Toronto. From 1888 to 1974, it was the site of the Riverdale Zoo (which in 1974 relocated to become the Toronto Zoo).  In 1978 the farm was reborn! Nowadays….the farm is open to the public all year-round. It specializes in pioneer breeds of farm animals that are hard to find on commercial farms. It is an example of a typical Ontario farm from between 1880 and 1920. 'sAnimals at the farm include poultry, waterfowl, goats, sheep, pigs, cows, donkeys, and horses.
There is a TONNE of great programming and I really believe that it is VITAL for kids who grow up in big cities to UNDERSTAND why farming is important.

Riverdale farm's funding (like many important Toronto attractions) came very close to being cut by the current mayor of Toronto last year! But thankfully was saved at the last moment….in no small part, thanks to the Riverdale Farm Stewardship Group. One event that I am pleased to be associated with that helps raise funds for the farm is:

Yes…I did this poster….a version of which will be sold to raise $$ for the farm!

The RFSG will work closely with the local Ward Councillor, City staff and Riverdale Farms’ numerous stakeholders, partners, and members of the general public to create new and vibrant partnerships that inform, educate and increase public awareness of the role farms have played and continue to play in our lives, now and for future generations.

The goal of the RFSG is to secure a stable and sustainable funding base to offset the operating costs of Riverdale Farm and ensure existing service levels are maintained or enhanced while remaining accessible to the public.

Come out this week (tomorrow) and help support this awesome cause!!! Here is what you will enjoy for only $10!!

More info at RIVERDALE FARM AID.COM
Great GREAT GGGRRREEEAAAT and worthy cause!

2.)  I got this from someone on Facebook…but I am already implementing like 5 of these tips in my life…..It's REdick! (that is hipster talk for ridiculous!) 50 Life  Hacks to Simplfy your World….check it out!!!

I like these ones…

BUT THERE ARE LOTS MORE…

3.) 99% INVISIBLE. OH MY GOSH I LOVE THIS PODCAST!!!! Honestly….this is really an outstanding podcast…..
What's it about??

99% Invisible is a tiny radio show about design, architecture & the 99% invisible activity that shapes our world. The show started life as a project of KALW public radio in San Francisco and the American Institute of Architects in San Francisco. We are distributed by PRX on PRX Remix and public radio stations around the country.

We are a completely independent production and raise all of our funds directly from the listeners, most notably from our record breaking Kickstarter campaign, and from podcast underwriters.

"99% Invisible…is completely wonderful and entertaining and beautifully produced…”
-Ira Glass, This American Life

I really cannot say enough about this show…so freaking interesting!!!!!!
And for those of you who have little time…..each "episode" is less than 30 minutes of BLISS!!
Go to their SITE HERE….
or go to iTunes!
(thanks to Deb for this one!)

4.) ok….nerds and design freaks…..I give you the Inception Dishrack…….THIS IS STUNNING….it almost makes me want to clean dishes….with my hands……like a pioneer……

Inspired by the movie of the same name, designer Luca Nichetto has created this SPECTACULAR silicone tabletop dish rack (or desk organizer).
TO FIND OUT WHO SELLS IT….CLICK HERE….

5.) ok…not sure if this is as funny as most of my #5's…..but I WAS AMAZED BY THIS…
(Cheepay - you must check this out!) "ONE TAKE MOVIES" = Ah-MAH-zing!!!!!!

WW169: TONYA CORKEY, RUPAUL, and EX-MEN

Hey guys! Here are the 5 things that I LOVE this week!
Welcome to "Wonderful Wednesday"!
(A special welcome to all my new friends reading this for the first time!)

1.) Hey art lovers…..fellow Toronto-based artist Tonya Corkey creates super cool portraits with ordinary lint collected from clothes dryers. Um……AWESOME!!!!!!!

“My work hybridizes the discarded material of lint with the second hand image – the iconic school photograph – to conceptualize my interests. Materiality conceptually layers the work. As a byproduct of society, lint consists of fibers, hair, dead skin and other debris, and thus directly referencing people and their daily activity. Lint and cast off photographs are both discarded materials – materials that reflect the idea of a decaying memory."

Find out more about Tonya Corkey's work here. Because it is ah-maze-ing!

2.) Ok gays and ladies THIS one is enjoyable. Is it fluffy and silly? YES. "RuPaul What's the Tee? with Michelle Visage"
This is a new podcast, and I really enjoy it. It is quite funny, and these two fierce ladies chat about a bevy of topics - from juicing and health to nail art and music…..from meditation to facelifts!
It is helping to bring out my inner sis-tah.
I mean that in the most wonderful and respectful way!
Check it out. SUPER FUN!!!!!

3.) THESE…...I NEEEEEED these. As many of y'all know, I have an obsession with a coloured show. Well check this out………Adidas already has options for customizing your shoes….CHECK THIS OUT….but wait…….come August, the Adidas ZX Flux is about to become INCREDIBLY customized!!! BY YOU!!!!!  The new mobile phone app will allow users, to easily apply any photographic image, texture or artwork to the shoe!

OH
MAH
GAWD
You KNOW I am gonna create my own Adidas ZX Flux Photo Print shoe based on my work! And then they will deliver them right to my door!!
I can hardly wait!

4.) These are neat. Porcelain masters Rosenthal presents ‘TAC big cities’ tableware designed by BIG architects and KILO. This stunning dish ware depicts the silhouette of various world city skylines such as London, New York, Paris, Toronto!
LOVELY!!

So simple and classy!
The skylines are outlined in heritage blue on a surface of white porcelain.
Very very nice!!!

5.) This may seem long…..but stick with it…3 minutes in it is EXTRA funny!
It amused me…..especially after having seen the new X-men film this week…….

(here is a link!)
Hey…...and also check out The Pete Holmes Show! VERY FUNNY!

3.) This is for you ENGLISH LIT nerds who read this….I know there are at least 3……You need to buy this poster…...

A Grand Taxonomy of Shakespearean Insults - Art Poster by Charley Chartwell
A tribute to Shakespeare's dagger-like wit, featuring 100 of his greatest insults, categorized by topic. This array of verbal swordplay includes classics like, "I was seeking for a fool when I found you", and "More of your conversation would infect my brain".

4.) BLOG OFF! Ok….so you know how I am addicted to podcasts these days……well……besides my top 4 (Nerdist, WTF, This American Life and Jordan, Jessie Go) I found a new podcast to enjoy the heck out of! Do you enjoy the Brits like I enjoy the Brits? Well then you are gonna HEART this podcast called International Waters.

I
nternational Waters is a pop culture comedy quiz show where land laws do not apply. Join host Dave Holmes and competing teams of world-famous comedians from the US and UK in a hilarious and lively test of pop culture knowledge (and the ability to make up baloney when that knowledge fails). It's part panel show, part trivia quiz and all laughs. It's also a little embarrassed it wrote that last sentence.

COME ON!!!
Nothing funnier than British v. American laughs!!!
Get it on iTunes!

5.) I saw this last week…but then husband forwarded it to me again last night…..so FANTASTIC…….see all the photos in "Unhappily Ever After" on their tumbler…..here are a couple I especially enjoyed……
